The Russian President has openly stated that he plans to attack the United States missile defense system in Europe after it is created. How will President Elect Obama react to this new challenge? Should he acquiesce the Russian leaders demands and forget about the missile defense system? Or should he come out the gate strong and show Russia that he won’t be bullied? My personal opinion is that as the worlds super power we don’t need to be taking orders from other nations. I do believe in good diplomacy but we can’t let scare tactics ordain our actions – especially not in the beginning of Obama’s term. He needs to show the world that while he opposes violence he will not be controlled by other nations. It is ironic that a missile defense site could be attacked. After all, this site is to act as a countermeasure to any missiles fired against the United States. One would imagine that it could protect itself. However everything I have read has told me that this new site could be vulnerable to attack from Russia or other adversaries.
What do you think should be done about this missile issue? We certainly can’t appear weak to Russia because we all remember what happened when JFK didn’t stand up to Russia. The Russian leader made threats towards the US right after JFK began his term. He did nothing to combat these threats and within a year we had the Cuban missile crisis. We need to act diplomatically if possible. If it is not possible, I hope that the president elect ready to defend our country from threatening nations.
