Trey Obering, the missile defense chief for the Pentagon, stated that he was optimistic about the anti missile system and that he thought that it was definitely, “workable.” The anti missile system has proven effective in test settings at shooting down ballistic missiles. My personal feeling is that missile defense and national security is generally more important than developing new weapons. In general we try to practice diplomacy. That is why defense systems will always be slightly more valuable than offensive systems. We need to do research for weapons so that we stay on the cutting edge, but our first priority should be to ensure that Americans are safe and protected in the event of an enemy attack.
Trey Obering was so confident in the new missile defense system that he said, “Our testing has shown not only can we hit a bullet with a bullet, we can hit a spot on a bullet with a bullet.”
As of now, we do not know if the missile defense system will ever be instituted. Obama’s foreign policy advisor stated that he has never committed to continuing with plans for the missile defense system. His adviser stated, “His position is, as it was throughout the campaign, that he supports deploying a missile defense system when the technology is proved to be workable.”
As stated by the missile defense chief, the system is ready and functional. I hope that Obama can see the necessity that we have for this program and that he will continue on with plans set up by President Bush.
