The United States is sending one of their negotiators, John Rood, to Moscow in order to meet with Moscow leaders to discuss the missile shield that they have so adamantly opposed. As of now, Russia has openly stated that they plan to attack said missile shield which will be set in Poland and the Czech Republic. Russia believes that the missile shield is a plan to gain a military advantage over Russia which the United States can then exploit at some later date.
Rood is set to meet with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Ryabkov. The plan is to discuss, “transparency and confidence-building measures regarding the proposed US missile defense deployments in Europe.”
In my opinion, the United States needs to diplomatically relieve Russia of any concerns about this missile shield. The shield is clearly for protection against rouge nations and unstable dictatorships. It would be possible to partner with Russia in this deal in order to relieve their concerns. If we partnered with Russia, our costs for the development of this shield could be shared and we would diffuse an otherwise difficult situation. Can you see any negative implications of inviting Russia to join us in this endeavor? Do you think that they would accept? I personally believe that Russia would jump at the opportunity because then they could have a hand in this US military project which would allow them to keep a close eye on the functions of this shield.
