Problems in Gaza

Written by Jonathan Formby

The White House called for a cease fire in Gaza on this past Monday. Israel has continued to target Hamas in Gaza while Hamas has attacked Israel in return. A spokesperson for Israel called Hamas a “terrorist gang.” The same speaker stated that it was necessary to destroy this gang. Hamas replied stating that Israel is committing a holocaust against Hamas. There is no surprise that Israel continues to attack Hamas when they have openly stated that Israel should be eradicated as a people group and that they should not have a place on the map. These hatreds between the two peoples are incredibly deep seated. If necessary, I am sure that the United States will step in to help Israel. Hamas is a known terrorist network while Israel is a long lasting ally of the States. However I believe the US will reserve this as only a last resort. This country is fed up with war and the deaths of US soldiers. A war in Iraq has lingered on for seven years and our country is ready for a break. The only way that the people of the US would support such an endeavor is if they could be convinced that there is no other option.
Should the US get involved? Are we really ready to risk more US soldiers’ lives? How far should we go to protect our allies? Most importantly, what do you think Obama plans to do about this issue?
