Could Russia function as an ally for the United States? It appears that it is very possible that Russia is open to a diplomatic relationship/partnership with the United States. When the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev met with US leaders he said, “I think we can create in principle a new framework … a partnership between the U.S. and Russia.” If the President of Russia is serious in his assertions, it is essential that we take him up on this offer. We would certainly have to make some compromises, such as the missile shield we have been developing. However the compromises would be minimal when compared to the powerful ally we would gain. If we continue to alienate and upset large, financially capable nations such as Russia, we will wind up burning all our bridges. If that happens, we could slip into dire circumstances in the Untied States. However I have hope that the new administrations might take President Medvedev up on his offer to farm a partnership between the two nations. The Russian President suggested a few ways that the issue of the missile defense system could be resolved. He commented that there could be a global system of protection against rogue states or to utilize existing programs and technology that are already setup throughout the world.
Could the United States and Russia function as military and economic allies? If they could it is certain that we would be in a much stronger position than we currently enjoy.
