The New York Times recently featured a peace about Israel asking the United States to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities last year. President Bush did not grant the request. However the NY Times report went on to state that Bush has agreed to a plan to disable or sabotage Iranian nuclear plants.
So why didn’t we simply bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities last year when requested by Israel? The president did not authorize such an endeavor because they feared that such an attack would cause Iran to stop communicating with nuclear investigators. There were also fears that attacking Iran would cause another war in the Middle East.
Do you believe that we made the right decision not to attack Iran last year? My opinion in that we did make the right decision because if we had attacked them, we would have another costly war on our hands. We can’t spread ourselves too thin. This nation can’t afford to send more troops and more money oversees to fight another war. Also it is very likely that there could be a diplomatic answer to this nuclear issue with Iran. If we go and outright attack them, they will certainly break off all communication and start taking their nuclear operations underground. Any hope that we have to resolve this dispute is in diplomacy and patience. If we do find conclusive evidence that Iran is making nuclear weapons and all other options have been exhausted, then we would inevitable have to attack the nation’s nuclear sites. However we can all hope that the problem does not escalate that far.
