The new secretary of state, Hilary Clinton is planning to renegotiate the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia. Thus far, there has not been a tremendous amount of development with the START treaty with Russia. However Clinton has promised that that will soon change. When discussing the treaty she stated that Obama, “will have a very strong commitment to START treaty negotiations” Accordin to Clinton, the objective is to make sure that Russia knows that the US is “serious.” Are you hopeful for START treaty negotiations being conducted by Clinton and Obama? I have to say I think that it is a breath of fresh air. This country needs to do something fast about our deteriorating relationship with Russia. We can use a strong ally with political, financial, and military resources such as Russia. If we pool our resources together, we will have even greater global influence. However at the same time, I don’t believe that we will ever be able to fully let our guard down around such an ambitious nation.
The START agreement is set to expire in December of 2009. That’s good news because the new administration will have ten months to set up a new treaty, negotiate with Russia, and get both parties on board and ready to cooperate symbiotically.
Do you have any objections to this treaty with Russia? What needs to happen with this treaty to make it a successful endeavor for both parties? I think that we need to make sure this treaty is pleasing to the US as well as Russia or the agreement will not be effictive.
