Yesterday I started a post on the START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) treaty that we currently have with Russia. This treaty is an agreement about military and nuclear issues. However there has been little progress made in the realm of this agreement in recent months. However the new proposal to replace the current start proposal which expires in december, will be aimed at limiting nuclear weapons. Russia also plans to negotiate about the US missile shield near Russia. I am still uncertain why Russia is blowing this missile shield so far out of proportion.
Clinton stated, “The non-proliferation treaty is the cornerstone of the non-proliferation regime, and the United States must exercise leadership needed to shore it up.” She continued to say, “So we will seek agreements with Russia to secure further reductions in weapons under START, we will work with this committee and the Senate toward ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.”
President Obama is commited to reducing the number of nuclear weaponst that we have here in America. The treaty will likely emphasize a reduction in the number of nuclear weapons on both sides. If both sides can agree to stop revamping their nuclear arsenal, we will have a better relationship with Russia while saving a lot of money in the process. After all, how many nuclear weapons do we need to protect our country? Shouldn’t we be focusing on defense more than building up our weapons arsenal?
