I have promised to offer a series of stories. Each story that I will post now, for the rest of this week, wil be one that I feel would make for a good plotline in a film. This first story takes place during the Revolutionary War. That is why I have made reference to the “new Marines.”
On March 3, 1776, 270 of the “new Marines” traveled across the waters that surround the Bahama Islands. They quietly landed their two sloops on one of those Islands. It was an island on which the British had made use of an ancient fort.
The British had stored a sizable amount of gun powder in that fort. The Marines were supposed to capture that gunpowder. The American forces were in desperate need of more gunpowder.
The Marines landed on the beach of the targetted Island. They quietly approached the well-guarded fort on that Island. The Marines skillfully surprised and overtook the guards, thus managing to capture the coveted gun powder.
Early-on in the history of the United States, the men of the U.S. Marine Corp proved their usefulness. Without a unit such as the Marines, the American forces would not have had a contingent that was prepared to handle the challenging task that was undertaken by the “new Marines.”
I would like to see that early Marine victory used in some sort of Hollywood film. I encourage any of the current filmmaking students to think about making such a film.
