According to various military parties, North Korea will “test” President Obama in his early presidency. What will this test look like? It is likely that North Korea will continue to test destructive weapons in the hopes of having more bargaining power in peace negotiations. The US as well as North and South Korea, Japan, China, and Russia are set to have nuclear disarmament discussions and negotiations about North Korea’s nuclear facilities. Originally this same group of six nations agreed to a disarmament deal but North Korea has since broken their end of the agreement. They have continually not allowed inspectors to come and verify that they are no longer producing nuclear weapons or uranium. Since these nations are set to discuss disarmament yet again soon after Obama takes office, it is highly likely that North Korea will flex their muscles hoping to have increased bargaining power. President Bush’s National Security Advisor commented saying, “These talks will be an early challenge for the incoming administration . . . North Korea will test the new administration by once again trying to split the six parties and renegotiate the deal.” Essentially North Korea is going to try to look powerful so that they will get the first attention of the President. However the fact is that the President will need to address this situation immediately. North Korea will be taken seriously because of the threat that the nation poses. However I think it would be foolish to let the nation leverage their nuclear weapons in order to get more aid and freedom from the other five nations in the agreement.
