Remember the scenes in Star Wars when robots or droids were fighting battles for various nations? Well it appears that something similar could be on the menu for future militaries. Believe it or not this is not a science fiction / fantasy entry. The reality is that machines and robots are already used in heavy fire and dangerous military zones. Sometimes they transfer weapons and bombs from one sight to another. However there is the potential for the military to be comprised of half human personnel and half robots according to Peter Singer.
What is the implication for the people of America? Fighting could become very different if robots are deployed to fight battles. It seems like commanders would more willingly deploy robots to attack a nation than they would deploy human soldiers whose lives are worth something. This begs the question: would this technology cause more war, pain, and suffering in the world? There is also the dilemma to consider that these robots would likely be made by other nations. Do we really want China developing our military weapons?
What are your thoughts on this issue? Could it be a good idea for the United States? What are some pros and cons to consider? How would this affect human military personnel? Would there then be fewer jobs for human beings in the military? Does the government really want to cut more jobs in the years ahead?
