Obama is advocating that the Untied States and Russia act as leaders for the rest of the world by discussing the nuclear situation and coming to an agreement to cut nuclear weapons. This has been a great area of interest for the President. He is readily seeking to establish a world with less arms production and greater use of diplomacy. Does this mean that we will have less use for United States military personnel? Honestly I think that the only reduction in personnel we are facing will be the reduction caused by the pullout from Iraq. Thousands of troops will no longer be needed once we pull out from Iraq. However conversely more troops will be needed for the increased effort in Afghanistan.
Obama commented about his nuclear proliferation efforts implicating Russia stating, “I think it’s important for the United States and Russia to lead the way on this.” He made it very clear that he wishes to restart conversations with the Russian President Medvedev about nuclear proliferation. I must admit that I think Obama has done a good job of honing in on a potentially powerful ally for the United States. If we could come to better terms with Russia about nuclear issues, we would eliminate a vast military threat while giving us a strategic global military and economic alliance. There is no negative to creating better terms with Russia. We will also have increased cooperation with out missile shield in the region if we can partner with Russia in an effort to reduce weapons stockpiling.
