I feel like the majority of the United States Military research funds are structured towards advances of missiles, atomic weapons, and jets. It is my understanding that billions of dollars are spent every year on new advances for nuclear weaponry. What is going to happen to these funds now that President Obama is pledging denuclearization? Will the research for new nuclear methods simply be discontinued? I don’t care what the President says, I don’t believe that we can give up our research for nuclear weapons. The following mentality will always be the motivator behind our gross spending on nuclear research: If we don’t find and develop these technologies, someone else will. The creators of the atomic bomb went through this exact dilemma during research. If we had not created the weapon first, it could have been developed by the Germans. Who knows what kind of world that would leave us in today? That is why the argument can always be made that nuclear research is beyond necessary. I am not advocating that our current spending habits for nuclear research are correct or healthy. I think that we spend too much money in this sector. However I pose this question: is there really a better way? Can we truly abandon the concept of always having the most advanced nuclear weapons? What if we pull back research on these projects and other nations get ahead? What kind of world would we be left with then?
