On Tuesday President Obama approved a plan to send 17,000 US troops to Afghanistan. His rational for the deployment of more troops was so that we can “stabilize a deteriorating situation.” Obama went on in his speech to state that we have not given the situation in Afghanistan enough attention or action. A few months ago the General in charge in Afghanistan, General McKiernan, asked for an additional 30,000 troops in Afghanistan. As you can see this is clearly a compromise that President Obama made. I for one appreciate that he has sent over what he believes to be the correct number, rather than simply giving in to whatever military leaders ask. I think it is important for our leader to assess each situation carefully rather than always making decisions based on recommendations.
When speaking of his rational for additional troops in Afghanistan, Obama stated, “The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and Al Qaeda supports the insurgency and threatens America from its safe-haven along the Pakistani border.” I am completely in favor of sending additional troops to Afghanistan because there is evidence to support that terrorist regimes are located there. It is imperative that we as a nation continue to fight terrorism before the next problem or attack.
Do you believe it is the right move for us to send more troops to Afghanistan? Is there any guarantee that we will find terrorists or make progress in the region? What if we invest more time, money, and lives into the region only to make little progress? Is that a risk we can take?
