Our secretary of state, Hillary Clinton stated on Thursday that new leadership was likely for North Korea. This being the case, disarmament talks have now stopped as she believes we need to go back to the drawing board to create a new plan to factor in the new leadership. North Korea has stated that they plan to test and fie a long distance missile. Clinton addressed this saying that we have an urgent need to solve this problem before it escalates. Kim Jong-Il had a stroke last august which has left him in a questionable state of health. I for one am grateful that his leadership will soon be a thing of the past. I can’t imagine that the next leader will be more problematic or corrupt than Kim Jong-Il has been.
So far disarmament talks have been held between the United States, North and South Korea, China, Russia, and Japan. Do you think that Iran should be included in these disarmament talks?
Clinton stated that she believes South Korea is gravely concerned for the succession of Kim Jong-Il. She commented that South Korea is “looking to us to use our best efforts to get the agenda of denuclearization and non-proliferation back in gear.” Secretary of State Clinton made a very prudent observation that our goal should be to “come up with a strategy that is effective in influencing the behavior of the North Koreans at a time when the whole leadership situation is somewhat unclear.”
We need to act quickly to secure a decent relationship with the new leader so that we do not wind up with another enemy like Kim Jong-Il.
