It is time to get behind our new Commander in Chief and support the new concentration of effort in Afghanistan and the subsequent relinquish of control in Iraq to the actual Iraqi Government and Army. Iraq has been steadily improving and US forces have started to give much of the tough work over to the Iraqis in preparation for an eventual total withdrawal of all direct US support. Now, given the fact that there will be setbacks (i.e. bombings), it is time to start giving the Iraqi Government the actual task of governing its own people and resolving its own issues.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, has been steadily slipping into chaos. US Commanders, who have about 40,000 troops under their direct command, have been working with Coalition forces from the UK, Canada, and other European nations and still have admitted to reaching a “stalemate” with the resurgent Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters. This is unacceptable given the fact that the War on Terror started in Afghanistan in the fall of 2001 and that before the War in Iraq got out of hand the situation in Afghanistan looked promising.
It does not matter whether you support the War in Iraq or not (though you better support the troops). What is important is that the War in Iraq is drawing to an end, and the War in Afghanistan is bogged down. It only makes sense to redirect the focus of your military strength to the area that needs it most. It is time to put the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan in the ground… permanently. It is long overdue.
