The Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stated that she plans to ask Russia to stop selling arms to Iran. She plans to discuss these issues with Russian leaders in Geneva. She stated that Russian missile sales to Iran can only lead to problems for the United States, Europe, and Russia. A well-armed Iran could target any one of those regions and more.
I for one think that this discussion with Russia is overdue. As a nation we should be ensuring that minimal dangerous materials and weapons are allowed into Iran. This may make us look like the world police to some but we have to look out for our own security. A well-armed Iran could result in the attack of the United States, our territories, or the attack of our allies. I am glad that Clinton plans to do something about this issue. However my question is what do we do if Russia refuses to stop selling long-range missiles to Iran? We need to be as diplomatic as possible with this nation because ideally Russia would function as a US ally and allow the presence of our military shield in Europe.
This is truly going to be a test of the new administration. During the campaign Obama promised that greater diplomacy was the answer. I can only hope that his assertions prove to be correct. I will leave you with one last question: what if diplomacy fails? In theory couldn’t there always be a diplomatic solution to every problem if it were executed perfectly?
