Today The United States Defense Secretary stated that the US will not fire on a North Korean test missile. He continued to state that he believed North Korea was definitely going to test a long range missile.
I was slightly confused when I first heard that our policy towards this matter had changed. The Defense Secretary addressed the previous comments on this issue made by Admiral Timoth Keating. Keating had stated that the US was ready to fire at a North Korean missile. However Robert Gates assured reporters that the US would take no such action unless there was an immediate threat towards the US or our territories. If a missile were headed toward the US then it would be engaged, according to Gates.
In the interview, gates stated, “I would say that we are not prepared to do anything about it.” He also stated that the launch would “probably happen.”
Do you think that this policy is a little too soft? In hearing these remarks it seems like the man just doesn’t care. Perhaps he is trying to portray an image of solidarity and strength. After all, should the world’s greatest superpower really be concerned about another nations missile launch?
So what do you think? Are we taking too soft an approach to this matter? I will admit that threatening North Korea has done nothing thus far. However what can we hope to gain by simply doing nothing?
