On Sunday the UN met to discuss North Korea’s test of the Taepodong 2 missile. Spending three hours discussing the issue yielded little progress. It is obvious that in launching this test missile, North Korea broke several UN resolutions. The ambassador for Mexico stated, “Members of the Security Council agreed to continue consultations on an appropriate action by the council in accordance with its responsibilities given the urgency of the matter.” The UN meeting was called by both Japan and the United States, two of the nations who had counseled North Korea to abandon their test missile launch. This missile is capable of reaching targets at up to 4100 miles meaning that the US could be hit with this new weaponry.
Pyongyang is in direct violation of a resolution adopted by the UN which stipulates that North Korea may not test any more nuclear weapons or missiles. The resolution was established in 06 after North Korea conducted a nuclear test and some missile launches.
The US ambassador promised that discussions would continue so that there would be “a clear and strong response from the council.”
How can the UN get North Korea to comply with previous resolutions? It is apparent that the nation is ready to risk war over this issue. That is why North Korea threatened war to Japan if Japan were to intervene with the missile test. I can only hope that something is done before this nation gains more accurate and dependable weaponry. One thing is certain: North Korea cannot be trusted with deadly weapons.
