North Korea and Japan

Written by Jonathan Formby

Recently North Korea warned Japan not to search for debris from the missile launch last week. From the beginning, Japan had been opposed to this North Korean launch. North Korea has stated that Japan has already sent ships to search for the debris of the rocket. The North Korean government went so far as to say that Japan was spying on North Korea and that it was intolerable. Japan has stated that they might go after the debris in order to learn more about the test missile North Korea fired. A Japanese spokesperson stated, “If it is possible to retrieve the debris, I think it is better to retrieve it.” North Korea stated that Japan was a centuries old arch enemy.

Where does the United States fall into this mix? It is ironic that North Korea is verbally assaulting Japan for “espionage” when several other nations all confirmed reports that this was a test missile. The US as well as Japan and other nations have used space imaging to learn that this was a test missile fired by North Korea. However North Korea did not step out to try and reprimand the US for spying with space imaging. Regardless, something needs to be done about this issue with North Korea. We can’t let North Korea continue to fire test missiles and develop deadly weapons. Somehow we need to diplomatically solve this problem before advanced weapon capabilities turn this issue into a real conflict.
