US Troop Pullout

Written by Jonathan Formby

As of now the United States is still on track to pull out all troops from Iraq by 2011, according to General Ray Odierno. In his speech he stated that overall violence “remains at 2003 lows” in the region. Recent fatalities of US soldiers have dropped to the lowest levels since we began the war in Iraq. Interestingly, General Odierno stated that the military would be looking for some leeway in the deadlines for troop withdrawals. By June 30th, US troops are supposed to be pulled out from everywhere except military bases. Then by the end of the year, all of the troops are to vacate the region.
The General stated that if necessary, he would recommend staying in some of the cities slightly longer. However he stated that the decision ultimately relied on the Prime Minister of Iraq as to whether or not US troops would be fully vacated.
In other positive news, the Iraqi army is “becoming more competent.” From the beginning the quality of the Iraqi security forces has been of great concern. However now that the security forces are becoming more formidable, it looks as though the pullout could function properly.
What do you think about this pullout from Iraq? Should there be some flexibility so that we can stay in a few cities of Iraq if necessary? Should we really stick to the predetermined withdrawal date even if unforeseen events occur? Would Obama ever authorize a longer stay in Iraq? It seems as though democrats have been fighting to get out of the region for years. But what if we need to say longer?
