North Korea has stated that they will no longer cooperate with the UN watchdog who has been conducting inspections in nuclear facilities. Furthermore they stated that they plan to start up nuclear programs once again. Could this all be an elaborate bluff? In all honesty North Korea could be working for a bartering chip. However I have slipped away from that perspective in recent days. Since North Korea has resigned from the six party discussions, I feel that the nation truly is dissatisfied with the discussions. It is obvious that North Korea as a nation does not feel respected. Furthermore the nation desires to have nuclear capabilities for whatever unknown reason. We have a track record of disrespecting North Korea and I believe they are finally sick of it. Granted, I don’t think I would have handled the situation any differently in the past. However looking back, it seems as though we should have exercised slightly more diplomacy to get the job done. It is true that we were operating in good diplomatic fashion by exchanging aid for disarmament. However, would it have been better to take a less aggressive approach about verification for disarmament? After all, we have an advanced space imaging system and other methods of intelligence which could help us to keep tabs on North Korea. Would we be in a different situation today if we had pulled back and made the arrangement with North Korea, not insisting on immediate verification? Perhaps if we had been less aggressive the nation would have been more cooperative in the months after the agreement.
