On Friday the US attacked and killed 14 insurgents with air strikes. The Afghan patrol was ambushed by insurgents in an opium production region in Afghanistan. As a result the troops called in air support which “resulted in six insurgents being killed,” reported a military officer. From then on it became a ground battle as insurgents utilized RPGs or Rocket Propelled Grenades to try and weed out their counterparts. However the troops called in an additional air strike which killed 8 more insurgents.
It is never good news to hear of people dying. However it does give me hope for our purpose in Afghanistan to know that we are helping to clean up part of that country. Afghanistan marks one of the largest opium producing nations in the world. When we rid the country of insurgents, we are usually helping to combat the opium production problem.
How do you believe we are doing in Afghanistan thus far? What can we do to improve the situation? Is it an indication of success that we recently took out 14 insurgents?
It is worth noting that single bomb attacks are still extremely common in the region. On Friday Daud Ahmadi stated, “Today at 8:00 am a roadside bomb exploded against a woman and a man travelling by motorcycle. Both of them were killed.” No matter how much our military does in the region, these bomb attacks will continue until there is a serious regime change. The region is filled with radicals that perpetuate these constant bombings. It is unfortunate that we have to occupy Afghanistan at the moment. However I do believe that it will be for the good of the nation.
