Air Force Special Tactics is an elite group of Air Force soldiers who conduct special operations working closely with United States Navy Seals, Army Special Forces, and Rangers. The primary function of AF Special Tactics is to conduct undercover missions to recover distressed personal in enemy territory as well as to recover air space in enemy territory.
History
It all began in 1943, two years after the early remnants of the Navy Seals began training. During this time, the government needed special operations forces because of WWII. In order to integrate this into the Air Force, the 5318th Air Unit was redesignated as “Provisional Composite No. 1 Air Commandos.” At this time, their mission was to support the Chindits. The Chindits were the largest of the allied Special Forces for WWII. The Air Commandos went behind enemy lines in North Burma alongside the Chindits to fight against Japan.
After their noble fighting, they became known as Air Force Special Tacticts.
For those of you interested in joining the AF Special Tactics, there are several types of operations personnel. These include: “Combat Controllers (CCTs), Pararescuemen (PJs, AKA Pararescue Jumpers or Parajumpers), Special Operations Weather Technicians (SOWT), Combat Rescue Officers (CROs) which are the officer version of PJ’s, and Special Tactics Officers (STOs) which are the officer version of CCT’s.” (Wikipedia)
