Yesterday I discussed the recent developments North Korea has made on the production of new missile tests sites. We have tried diplomacy and we have tried fighting with sanctions, yet nothing seems to work. With regard to our sanctions on North Korea, we need to do one of two things. We can continue on this path or we can release North Korea from these sanctions. Neither answer seems to be too appetizing. If we continue to isolate the nation with sanctions, hope for an amicable solution to this problem will be lost. However if we simply withdraw our sanctions, North Korea will get the impression that the UN can be bullied. That is not something that we can afford to happen. Somehow we need to strike a deal with North Korea which is mutually beneficial. If we release them from sanctions and contribute economic aid into the nation in exchange for denuclearization we could have a working solution. But wait hasn’t this been tried before? Yes we originally had a deal with North Korea to provide economic aid in exchange for disarmament. However the nation became enraged when we wanted to verify disarmament. So somehow it must be different this time. Perhaps we should provide the aid to North Korea, release them from our sanctions, and give them a period of six months before the first UN checkup. If we do this North Korea might feel as though we are not being overly aggressive and could potentially be responsive to such an offer. The other alternative is to continue doing what we are doing now . . . which is getting us nowhere. As of now, North Korea is madder than ever and is more vigilantly pursuing weapons development. I think a bloody war with the nation is out of the question so diplomacy is the only option left. We have to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, whatever that may be.
