On Saturday Russia celebrated the 64th anniversary since their victory over Nazi Germany. To commemorate the occasion, the military made a stern demonstration. They pulled out nuclear missiles as well as advanced military vehicles. President Dmitry Medvedev stated, “We are sure that any aggression against our citizens will be given a worthy reply.” Medvedev also stated that “The victory over fascism is a great example and a great lesson for all peoples and is still current today when people are again starting military adventures.”
So what’s the cause for Russia’s demonstration? Recently Russia has engaged in a war with Georgia which has caused NATO to mediate. Unfortunately this has placed a great deal of stress on the region. Russia is strongly opposed to Georgian leadership as it could be characterized as pro-western leadership.
Medvedev stated that it is his duty to protect Russia so that it will be a “peaceful, happy and successful” place.
Interestingly such military demonstrations have died off since the cold war. Only within the past year has Russia resorted to these shows of military might.
Do you believe it has accomplished anything for Russia to parade around with their weapons? Is it simply to inspire the people of Russia or was this a technique to instill fear in the leaders of Georgia? Was Russia trying to send a message to the UN as well? Were they trying to say something to the United States?
