Yesterday I talked about Russia’s giant demonstration of military might which took place in the red square. The event was complete with jets flying over the scene as well as the unveiling of some of Russia’s most famous anti aircraft vehicles. Before this even took place on Saturday, Obama met with foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday. In his meeting he stated that he was very hopeful for improving ties between the two nations. This meeting with Sergei Lavrov was yet another attempt by Obama to build a strong working relationship with Russia. For years the United States has failed to make Russia a strong ally. Instead of utilizing the nations resources we have continued on with a mediocre relationshipw with Russia. However we are now moving in the right direction as we aer developing ties with this powerful nation.
Both Clinton and Sergei stated that denuclearization would take place over any conflicts in Georgia. If this is the case, why did Russia stage this military demonstration just two days after this meeting? What does this say about Russia’s intentions for disarmament? It makes me doubt thier desire to relinquish nuclear weapons. To continually agree to disarmament and then to make a military demonstration such as this shows me that Russia might not be ready to make good on thier promises. It is one thing to get a nation to make a promise for denuclearization. It is another thing altogether to get that nation to actually get rid of nuclear weapons. We learned this when dealing with North Korea.
