I must admit, that war seems rather romantic when you watch war movies and play with action figures as a kid. I know that I have been under that impression before. It is easy to come by, with the influences of the media always at the forefront of your mind. I have personally never served our great country in battle. So I cannot say whether or not war is romantic or a cruel and painful system to settle disputes. I would theorize that it would relate more closely to the latter.
I would like to point out something President Bush said recently in a video conference with military personnel stationed in Afghanistan. He said, “I must say, I am a little envious.” He went on saying, “If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed”
He then continued saying, “It must be exciting for you … in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You’re really making history, and thanks.”
What I would like to ask the people in this forum today is the following – do you believe war is a romantic event? I certainly understand where President Bush is coming from. Fighting for your country and to help a foreign nation establish democracy is a noble task indeed. I applaud those who so bravely and graciously are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, I honestly don’t know if war should be called romantic. Again, I have never fought so I am anxious to hear what those enlisted in the military might have to say about this issue. I would also like to know what military moms and dads would say to this. Please let us know what you think. Thanks for your thoughtful consideration and thanks for your comments.
