All this talk about Russia and their Nuclear arms program and the potential nuclear arms reduction treaty makes me wonder how important nuclear arms really are. Let’s face it, the US is not likely to utilize their nuclear weapons and wipe some country off the face of the earth. However what we are likely to do is to leverage our vast military capabilities into beneficial trade and political agreements which will further secure our role as the worlds primary superpower and economic center. If we begin to reduce nuclear weapons capabilities and if we lessen up on new weapons advancements I fear that our enemies will simply fill our shoes. If it’s not Russia who is making military and nuclear advancements it will be China or Japan or countless others. Once other nations develop a more formidable military and better weapons capabilities, the US will slip from international power. If we lose our military edge, it is only a matter of time before a new global military superpower emerges and takes the economic and political influence that we so greatly enjoy now. I hate the idea of dumping billions of dollars into weapons development that we will probably never use before they are outdated. But do you know what I hate even more? I loathe the idea of the US becoming deposed by a newer, stronger nation with more capable weapons.
