On Thursday President Obama said that the nuclear issue with Iran was at an integral point. He continued to state that he believes that Iran has the right to a nuclear program for power purposes so long as they abide by the rules and international treaties. This was a huge contrast to the traditional US stance on issues with Iran. He commented that it would be difficult to “overcome decades of mistrust” between the two nations. Obama stated that it is time for Iran and the United States to move on in diplomatic, cooperative relations.
Obama stated, “it is clear to all concerned that when it comes to nuclear weapons we have reached a decisive point . . . this is not simply about America’s interests. It is about preventing a nuclear arms race in the Middle East that could lead this region and the world down a hugely dangerous path.”
Obama referenced Israel’s nuclear weapons stating that he understood cries from Middle Eastern countries that “some countries have weapons that others do not.”
Obama used this time at the podium to reinforce his ideas and dreams for a nuclear free world where nations operated in harmony without the dangers of nuclear weapons.
