I believe that it is in the best interests of the citizens of this country to discuss political opinions and agendas. Those who are currently involved in the war in Iraq will be vastly impacted by the upcoming Presidential election. Every citizen of this country, as well as citizens of our neighboring nations will be effected, but the war in Iraq is an issue that is sure to be directly affected by whoever inherets president Bush’s seat at the whitehouse.
Today I would like to discuss Barack Obama and his plans for the war in Iraq. His position on the war has been consistent, which lends him more credibility than his counterpart Hilary Clinton. Obama was opposed to the war from the beginning in 2002. He voted against an invasion into Iraq and when the issue of a troop surge was suggested he voted against that as well. His views of the war are well in line with democratic sentiments. If elected as the next President, his plan is to withdrawal one or two brigades every month for sixteen months. This plan is quite similar to Hilary Clinton’s plans for Iraq. This being the case, we must face a simple truth. If either Obama or Clinton is elected, troops will be withdrawn within a two year period.
Is this a wise decision? Surely there has to be a better way than to throw in the towel.
Obama had this to say about the war in Iraq on Jan. 30 2007
“Too many lives have been lost and too many billions have been spent for us to trust the President on another tried and failed policy opposed by generals and experts, Democrats and Republicans, Americans and even the Iraqis themselves. It is time for us to fundamentally change our policy.”
He believes it in the best interests of the country to leave limited forces in Iraq to combat terrorism while withdrawing the majority of our forces.
On April 26, 2006 He said,
“I’m proud of the fact that I put forward a plan in January that mirrors what Congress ultimately adopted, and it says, there’s no military solution to this. We’ve got to have a political solution, begin a phased withdrawal, and make certain that we’ve got benchmarks in place so that the Iraqi people can make a determination about how they want to move forward.”
With these comments in mind, do you believe his plan would be best for the country?
