Yesterday North Korea admitted that they are enriching uranium in order to develop an arsenal of nuclear weapons. In the year 2002 the US found evidence that North Korea was enriching Uranium. Those events prevented the disarmament deal from ever being signed.
After launching what North Korea called a satellite, which was really a test for atomic weapons, the rest of the globe responded with anger and threats. This created greater animosity between North Korea and the UN. If there was hope for a nuclear free North Korea before, it appears that North Korea is no longer considering such options.
Saturday North Korea stated that they plan to use all of their plutonium for deadly nuclear weapons. Professor Yang Moo-Jin of the Seoul University of North Korean Studies commented that if North Korea really has developed uranium enrichment technology, as they have claimed, it would be a dangerous scenario. He stated, “If this is true, the world would face a very disturbing situation . . . the North has abundant natural uranium of good quality which, if combined with technology and facilities, would result in a great nuclear arsenal.”
It appears that North Korea is more desperate than ever for international respect and power. It is believed that North Korea is planning another atomic test to spite the US and the UN for recent sanctions imposed.
Should the US simply sit by and watch North Korea develop deadly weapons? Should we engage them with force? What options do we have at this point?
