The government of Poland is seeking clarification about a 2008 missile shield agreement that they agreed to with the previous administration. Under the arrangement, the United States would house a large missile shield which would be capable of combating all missile threats from Russia and rogue nations such as Iran. The United States has not moved forward with this venture yet because of strong opposition from our newfound ally Russia. Russia believes that the shield would give the US an unfair advantage over every other nation.
Government spokesperson Pawel Gras stated, “We’re still lacking an essential, clear response as to whether the United States will go ahead with the shield plan. It’s a fundamental question to which we need a definite answer.” He continued to state that Poland has done nothing but cooperate noting that they have, “met the pledges in this deal.” He clarified to state that the land for the US base is set aside and ready to be used. Given the situation with Russia, do you believe it would be wise to set up this missile shield and forfeit our chances at a peaceful, cooperative arrangement with Russia? Wouldn’t a cooperative agreement with Russia prosper the United States further than a missile shield in Europe? However at the same time we can’t appear to be a pushover. Somehow we need to get Russia to consent to this arrangement so that everybody wins. Previously there was talk of the Russians coming in on the deal also, so that their military could use the shield as well. However that arrangement was never given thorough consideration. Whatever we do, it is clear that the government of Poland desires swift, assertive action.
