North Korea now plans to build nuclear weapons using their abundant resources of plutonium. The Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, commented on the issue stating that it is “deeply regrettable” how North Korea is acting.
When did this situation escalate? Last Friday the U.N. met and agreed to develop stricter sanctions to further coax North Korea into a submissive state. The stricter sanctions came after North Korea conducted yet another underground nuclear test on May 25. However their actions only served to create greater animosity and acts of rebellion from North Korea. Specifically the UN voted to utilize an embargo on weapons shipments and also reaffirming a previous ban on weapons being imported into North Korea. The UN even stated that they would inspect North Korean ships to check for weapons entering into the country. North Korea commented on this plan stating that it was a blockade. They continued to say that if this plan is carried out, they will consider it an invitation to war.
North Korea stated, “No matter how hard the U.S.-led hostile forces may try all sorts of isolation and blockade, the DPRK, a proud nuclear power, will not flinch from them.”
It appears that Obama’s plans for denuclearization may have to be put on the back burner for now.
Sources indicate that North Korea could have enough nuclear plutonium to make roughly 6 nuclear weapons.
I have to admit that the thought of a Nuclear capable North Korea is very frightening. Is there any good solution to this problem? In my mind whatever we do must be done sooner than later before North Korea can finalize their weapons program.
