In April the United States and South Korea made an arrangement whereby they would help one another with protection from cyber attacks. The primary nations of concern include China and North Korea with a few problems from other nations. On a daily basis, there are 95,000 cyber attacks on South Korean computer networks. However only 11 percent of those attacks are from trained hackers trying to gain information or destroy networks. Yoo Ho-Jin from the National Intelligence Service recently stated, “Our country continues to be vulnerable. Some of our government branches failed to function when we recently simulated a cyber-attack on them.” What does this mean for South Korea? The nation needs to devote even more funds towards preventing cyber attacks. China and North Korea are developing skilled networks of hackers to gain intel on nations around the globe. Both nations are consistently attacking the United States in an attempt to gain privileged military information. China is leading the pack in hacking capabilities. There is evidence to support the fact that the government of China knowingly allows hacking groups to prosper in the country.
I believe that this is where the future of battles will be conducted. Bringing down another nations computer networks could give the attacking nation intel and control. As we move forward, it is important that American continues to provide funds for the protection of our governmental computer networks. If we fail to do this, other nations will develop technologies and methods of infiltration that we will not be able to combat.
