Recently there was a response to one of my posts about North Korea saying that we shouldn’t worry too much about them. Furthermore he stated that if they ever become a threat, we should just wipe them off the map. I am all for taking preventative measures as opposed to waiting until the time when North Korea becomes truly dangerous. That person also stated that we are only feeding the frenzy by giving North Korea so much press. I partly agree that we are giving them what they want in continually discussing this issue. However I don’t think that there is a better way. We are at a crossroads and we are truly at a pivotal point in our diplomatic operations. Somehow we must find a way to diplomatically navigate this controversy. If we can somehow dissuade North Korea from further developing weapons, we would be in a place of control without taking it through force. If we are to engage North Korea in war as my most recent contributor suggested, we have to look at a few of the implications. First of all, do we want to incur the extra cost? If we simply nuked the country as this person suggested, that would be no great cost initially. But it might lead to a less stable global situation. If we nuked North Korea, we would lose all trust from our allies. We would reinforce the notion that America is power hungry and that we will do anything to maintain that power. Right now America needs more advocates not less. The way to gain those advocates is through diplomacy first and war second.
