The President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, stated that he is ready to sign an agreement with President Obama which will dramatically reduce nuclear arms.
He commented, “We are ready to reduce the number of our strategic defense arms by several times compared to START (a previous arms reduction treaty).”
This week Russia and the US will meet in Geneva to discuss the details of the arms reduction once more. The goal will be to develop a comprehensive treaty which will reduce arms on both sides. This is all part of Obama’s goals for eventual denuclearization globally. Obama has acknowledged the animosity that has traditionally existed between Russia and the US. This is part of his plan to help build a strong foundation uniting the two nations as allies rather than foes or nations which simply coexist.
I have to admit that I support an arms reduction treaty. I am skeptical as to the plausibility of a global relinquishment of nuclear arms but I do believe that strong treaties and negotiations could lead to less nuclear weapons which is a very positive thing. Either way, this is a step in the right direction as far as I am concerned. Can you see any possible negative implications from an arms reduction treaty with Russia? The only negative scenario that I could find is if Russia agrees to the treaty but does not make good on their end. Additionally I don’t think it will be a perfect setup if we have to forfeit our missile shield to get Russia to agree to the reduction treaty.
