US Coast Guard Far More Than Just MilitaryAlthough sometimes not viewed as a military branch, the United States Coast Guard is one of the five branches of the US Military. The USCG is tasked with protecting the United States’ coastlines from drug smuggling operations, illegal immigrants, and other crimes that take place at sea. The Coast Guard also provides along with law enforcement, search-and-rescue units, which save countless lives from boating accidents, oil spills, hurricanes, or other hazardous situations. Military Careers That Keep You Close At HomeThere are many different careers that are offered in the Coast Guard. You can pursue a career as a gunner, law enforcement, a boatswain aboard a USCG clipper, or the pilot of a HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter. Your Coast Guard job could deal with law enforcement, environmental protection, or maritime safety. Coast Guard ScholarshipsAThe Coast Guard has a unique college scholarship program that helps members get through their college education. This program, known as College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative, pays for two years of tuition in selected schools. The program also trains members in the skills that they will require for their experience in the Coast Guard and USCG Reserve.
