Get Ready to Return to School with VUB
Are you nervous about the possibility ofgoing back to school after taking several years off to serve your country?Would you like to take a refresher course but just don’t have the extra moneyto spare? Many veterans feel this way. That’s why the U.S. Department ofEducation created the Veterans Upward Bound program. Keep reading to learn howthe VUB can help you get ready to go back to school.
VUBis a free program that will help you regain your academic skills throughrefresher courses and will, in turn, boost your confidence before you go toyour degree or certification program.
Theprogram includes:
- Help to improve skills in math, foreign language, compositions, science labs, reading, literature, computer basics, and any other subject you need to master for success beyond high school.
- Short-term remedial or refresher classes for high school graduates that have delayed pursuing a college education.
- Basic skills development for veterans that would like to successfully complete a high school equivalency program and gain admission to a college education program.
- Lessons about good study skills.
- Assistance with applications to colleges and universities.
- Assistance with applications for financial aid.
- Academic advice and assistance.
- Career counseling.
- Assistance in getting veterans services from other available resources.
- Exposure to cultural events, academic programs, and other educational activities.
Inorder to qualify for the VUB program, you must meet all of the four following requirements:
- You must be a U.S. military veteran who served at least 181 days of active duty and your discharge falls (any condition except dishonorable) on or after January 31, 1955
- Meet the low-income criteria according to the U.S. Department of Education’s annual guidelines OR you must be a first-generation potential college graduate
- Show an academic need for the program
- Meet other local requirements of your VUB station (an example might be county of residence).
