Question veteran history

not sure if I can get help here...I am having the flag that was on my late father-in-laws casket at his funeral put in a shadow box for my husband for Christmas. I need to be able to find his actual dates of service, his rank when discharged and where he served. I have a social sec. # but can't seem to get anywhere with it. I am told that if I can get a copy of his DD214 most of what I am looking for will be on it. Can anyone help me ? Thanks.
