Today Obama Announces That He Wants To Reduce Military Jobs By Cutting Defense

Barack Obama announced today his strategy to mark a turning point in US Military history by cutting military jobs and reducing funding by hundreds of billions.

Obama said from the Pentagon press briefing room that the “military will be reshaped with an emphasis on countering terrorism, maintaining a nuclear deterrent, protecting the United States homeland, and deterring and defeating aggression by any potential adversary.” While many may applaud, others are concerned at what costs?

As Obama’s administration orchestrates — along with Congress — reducing military defense spending by 27 billion dollars in 2013, it is unclear how this will play out with today’s military veterans and existing military jobs. For example, Obama is already searching how to limit the costs of military health benefits and veteran retirement programs.

As we all know, this is an election year therefore the administration’s justification for cutting military personnel and reducing veteran benefits may be justified by ending the Iraq war along with the reduction of troops in Afghanistan. According to Larry Fowler of, “although the reduction in 2013 may be reflective of cost savings with our departures in Iraq and Afghanistan, but what assurances are left to the American people regarding the long term safety of our country not to mention providing motivation for future enlistments and officer commissions.”

Administration did confirm a 10-15% reduction in Army and Marine personnel quota over the next ten years. The White House spokesman went on to say, “As Libya showed, you do not have to have boots on the ground all the time. We are refining our strategy to something that is more realistic.”

Obama may have to deal with criticism from both sides of the asile who support a superior military and questions his commitment to our national defense.

Again, this is an ‘election year’!
