They left out the part about humping 120 or so pounds of ammo, weapon, and equipment until your body either learns to adapt or breaks. Best job in the infantry during mounted operations, pure suckfest dismounted. All you poolies that think you’re gonna be running around like Rambo with a M60 better stop watching war movies and start deadlifting.

Can officers do this too or is it just for the marines that are E1 through E5?

Hey William, great question! Since A schools are frequently changing requirements due to the needs of the us Marines, I would pick up the phone and get the latest from your marine recruiter! Like others, I could offer my opinion but it doesn’t count here. My best. LF

My father served in the Marines, Alpha Company 1/4 1969 is what I found out. His DD214 reads “Specialty Number & Title 0331 Machine Gunner” and next to that in the following box reads “Civilian Occupation 8-93.77 Proof Tech Helper.

The first half of my tour in Nam as a Marine I packed an M-60 along with lots of ammo. I then made Sgt and became a squad leader. The first thing I did was order that everyone in the squad carried at least one bandoleer of ammo with him. There was a lot of bitching at first, but after our first major and prolonged engagement with the NVA, everyone thought it was a great idea and most even volunteered to pack two bandoleers. The company commander got wind of this and ordered all squads in the company do the same.
