My boyfriend is a marine and he is a Fort Leonard Wood. and he is going to be an MP
i am just really worried about his carrer choice and is being an MP dangerous?
i support him and i am proud of him, im just really worried.

military dot image Eric    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Listen lady, this job isn’t nesecarily safe, or ridicously dangerous. Depending on what you do, the risk increase and decrease. If he’s just going to be a regular police officer, then he could do anything from going to Iraq for a few tours, or be stationed at the base, and provide security.

military dot image porter    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

well acyually, the jobs about to become a bit more dangerous. u see, in 2011 practically all garrison duties are going to have been civiallianized. meaning that pretty much all the not-so-military-ish jobs such as m.p.,the newspaper, mechanics, etc. aren’t going to be handle by military personel, except in the field and other forward locations. so starting 2011, all mps are going to be field mps

Hello I was a US Marine Corporal in Camp Lejeune I am a Iraqui Freedom Ward Veterand I would like to be part of the US Marine MP do you think that is possible for me I am 28 years old and I like to return to the Military Life but in the Military Police

military dot image Anthony Martinez    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

I’m about to graduate highschool, 17 years old. I’ve always wanted to be apart of the Marine Corps and I know I will be very soon. How old do you have to be to become an MP? And is it a pretty hard job to get in the marine corps?

military dot image Jessica    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@antony maryinez you have to, be 19 upon completion of the mp training

military dot image James Blackard    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

so do you have to be a 2nd lieutenant to be a mp? that little summary just confused me, cause thats the way it sounds, but i was jus making sure.

military dot image Cadet Springs    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@Anthony: yes with parental consent; talk to your local recruiter

@James: Negative; 5811/5819 is the enlisted mos

@Sarah: Speaking from the standpoint of someone who is putting someone else in the same position your Marine is doing has put you in, I can relate. My advice is to stay supportive, and to not worry. I know it sounds crazy, but the military has top notch battlefield medicine for it’s members. They will fly you to him if there’s ever a situation where he needs you, because no doctor or corpsman can level with the support of the woman back home. As Fmr. President Ronald Reagan put it; “Trust but verify”. Trust that the Corp will bring him back like he left, but make sure it happens by supporting him and talking to him. God bless, and good luck.

My son is a Marine MP who graduated from Fort Leonardwood. He is now stationed at Camp Lejune in North Carolina. As a mother, I couldn’t be prouder of him for his choice in life. What gets me through the tough times is to remember that there is a risk in any profession in life. Keep your head held high and stand tall and proud that you are able to know a U.S. Marine – So the next time you meet a member of the Marine Corps, don’t forget to let them know that you are proud of them for giving up their freedom so you can have yours.

I am a Marine! I joined in 1994 and made Sergeant in less than 4 years. I left active duty in 2000. I was a M.P.(5811) and stationed at Camp Pendelton. I worked road patrol like any city Police Officer. When I enlisted I wanted to go infantry, but my recruiter wouldnt have it and told me to pick another MOS. I picked Military Police. It was the best choice I could have made. Growing up all I ever wanted to be was a Marine…and thought that I would make a career out of it. I never thought I would be a Police Officer now. The Marine Corps and the Miitary Police opened many doors for me and I would do it over and over again! Semper Fi!

I am wanting to become Military Police in The Marine Corps. About how long does the training to be Military Police take? I will be 17 when I graduate and my mommie is going to sign the papers. Should I wait untill I’m a bit older depending on how long the training takes. How do you go about getting the job also, I have searched the internet and I haven’t found any answers.

military dot image JP    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

I was a MP in the Marines from 91-95 serving in Mogadishu. I’m glad to see there’s guys and gals wanting this job. My only advice is to know that there are serveral types of MP’s in the Marines. Field, Group and Baseline. Baseline is the patrol on bases and standing gates, this is what I wanted. I was unaware that there were other jobs for us. Field and Group MP’s are basically grunts with a badge, which is what I was. We spent many days in the field and on CAX or other field exercises. Don’t go in thinking you are going to be baseline because it may not happen. Good luck and Semper Fi.

military dot image SN    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

I may be only 16 but I’m really looking into this. I want to be a police officer and this would get me the training and give me what I need. I would like to know what it’s like for the girls. Then again it might be a little different for every girl.

I was an mp stationed at Twentynine Palms, Calif in 1966/67 then at Marine Barracks Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, Calif 1967/68 before deploying to Vietnam,,,1968/69..,I had a military drivers license at 29, stumps, so I did the motorized patrol, had everything from fist fights at base housing, clubs, theater, swimming pool area, streets, domestic fights, thefts, shootings, and lots of DUI’s..setup radar traps on the main roads, issues traffic violations etc…we had buglaries on base pretty frequently..since not everything had alarms,,we relied on calls from the troops on base..
..Seal Beach was more of patroling around the bunkers in the high explosive area, some funeral details, escorting 18 wheelers civilian trucks with miltary warheads going to other bases, and assiting the local police basic mos,,was supply..when I got to Vietnam I was a non crew doorgunner on 34,Huey and 46 helo’s,,and I carried spare gun parts to take to lz’s and other bases as a supplyman..
so the fact they trained me as an mp stateside, I worked my primary mos in Vietnam but not like how I expected or ever in my wildest dreams

i am going in tho the marines and i am going to be a mp. i just wanted to know if there is a k9 units. but i think it is going to be fun.

military dot image Phil    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Yes there is a K-9 unit in the Marine Corps, however I believe you have to be selected as a secondary MOS to do K-9. I was an MP for 4 years and enjoyed most of it. Keep in mind there are two types of MP’s. Field MP’s and Garrison MP’s, a field MP is used during combat operations to secure the perimeter of base camps and provide security for various convoys among many other things. A garrison MP is basically a cop on a base. Unfortunatly the Corps doesn’t give you much of a choice as far as what unit you will be attached to. Semper Fi.

military dot image kurtis    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

i am filling out paper work now to be a marine mp, i already got alot of info about the job, but my friends dad was in the airforce and worked on nukes basicly and he found that if i want to be an mp in the marines that i should get a millitary lawyer to look at my contract or else i could basicly get skrewed over and be in infatry or something, i already know that some marines get skrewed over, but idc if i do i just want to know if this is a 100% job if i do everything right.

military dot image Leatherneck MP    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@Kurtis: Listen up, I have been a Marine MP for the better part of my 20yrs in the Corps. When I enlisted back in the early ’90’s I had did not have a lawyer read my enlistment papers. Just make sure that before you sign anything you have 5800 on your papers as your MOS. I learned a lot from my brothers mistake. He wanted to be 0200 but went open contract and ended up being 1300 for 4 years and opted not to re-up. Being a 3rd Generation Marine in my Family; my father retired as a Major, grandfather was a WWII Devil Dog, I grew up in the Corps. I made sure that when I enlisted, that at the MEPS station before I signed that I saw 5800 on my papers. I even went as far as to tell the NCOIC that I was not going to sign that until I read every line of it and I wanted him to show me the MOS line and read it with me. You need to CYB (Cover Your Butt) before you head to boot. Any questions just respond in the thread and I will try to get back to you before you head to Boot.
Now, if you are going to my Island or Hollywood I will only show you mercy before you get there. If you make it off the Island alive; no matter who’s command you end up with remember this: you had better bust it every day, respond to orders without question. We are Marine MP’s we are tougher than other Marines, we are not friends with Marines who are not MP’s, we stand apart from our fellow Marines because we have to ensure peace and order on our Bases. We do things we are not proud of but we do them because WE CHOSE this position. Be proud, you will not only be a Marine, you will be a Marine MP.

military dot image Leatherneck MP    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@Austin: Contrats on your decision to be a MP in the Corps. Like Phil stated above, you do not get to decide if you are a Field or Garrison MP. If you are chosen as a Field MP you will be doing patrols in combat areas, basically keeping the Grunts in line and joining them in fire fights. As a Garrison MP, you get stuck on a base and like above as Phil stated “a cop on a base”. Now, Garrison MP’s are getting smaller in numbers since the Corps has instituted the Marine Corps Civilian Police. You could get a Garrison job but plan on being a Field MP.

I have done a lot of research on the militray, about different jobs. I am currently a Military wife and proud of it. My husband is infatry in the Marine Corps. I want to join the military really bad. As a wife I somewhat know what to expect from the Corps (military). The question i have is if i do decide to become a MP, is the basic traing the same as my husbands was( minus the female part) ? Would they station us together being married with one child? What can I expect after basic? I know with my husband being in the Corps I need to find a career coresponding with his job. Its either this or a corpsman with the navy. Basicly im trying to get as much info as possible, so I can make the right decision for me and my family.

Within the next year i am planning on enlisting in the marine corps.. I have gotten a lot of information due to the fact that i am engaged to an 11 and i have many friends who are also in or served in the corps. However, none are females.. I am planning on being a mp, and hoping to eventually join the k9 unit. I know being a female gives you a lot of restrictions on what jobs you can do. But for female mps do they only work on baseline, or is other work for them as well. I dont want to be an admin, i am not joining the marine corps to be a pencil pusher, i want to go where the action is. I need something intense to be keep me motivated and on track. military dot image larryf    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Hi Cheyenne, awesome that you’re pursuing your US Marine options! I would talk to your local Marine recruiter re the MP school. If not content, consider contacting the other branches and compare their military police schools. At the end of the day, you also want to consider which branch offers police training that civilian police departments honor the most ‘after’ your military job service. Good luck!

Hi there! I am just curious about whether to join the marines as a MP or go into infantry. My boyfriend is an 0311 and doesn’t really want me to join the marines at all, but since it is something I want to do I am not letting him stop me. If he has an issue with it he can leave. Anyways if I do become an MP I will want to eventually become a dog handler otherwise if I go into infantry I would eventually want to become an officer. I know with me being a female I am going to have to challenge myself to prove my worth to everyone, but I am by any means not afraid to upshow any guy who thinks he is better than me just because he’s a guy. But again to reiterate my question, since I did talk alot, should I make my MOS infantry or MP?

military dot image larryf    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Caitlin, I’m only a military veteran but I would suggest research into the job (‘dog handler’) for each of the branches since this type of school may vary. I would also consider what civilian jobs are available for this training and experience once you leave the military. Lastly, between officer and enlisted, clearly becoming an officer offers more leadership training if given a choice. On the other hand, education and college benefits are super once you serve. Here are the numbers for your military recruiters. Best to you, Larry

military dot image larryf    Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Forgot, LAW ENFORCEMENT opportunities abound after your military service. I would think both, short and LONG TERM!
