Obama and Romney Share Core Military Positions

Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama disagree on many things, but they share core positions when it comes to the military. When the two actually disagree about the military’s position in the United States and the world, it is almost always because they differ on some minor detail.

The Military Plays a Key Role in America’s Dominance

President Obama and Mitt Romney both believe that the U.S. military plays a key role in America’s dominance, and they want to do whatever possible to maintain power on the world stage. They often refer to this “leadership.” What they actually mean, though, is that the United States needs a powerful military that can crush opposition from any enemy. Without this power, the United States cannot maintain a leadership position in the world.

Both men are willing to consider any and all options to maintain influence. This could mean increasing the number of Air Force drones used to engage enemies and gather intelligence. It could even mean using nuclear weapons to eliminate persistent threats.

Military Might is Important in China-U.S. Relations

Both Romney and Obama believe that the military plays a key role in the developing relationship between China and the United States. China’s rapidly growing economy has given the country significant influence over East Asia in recent years. The U.S., however, does not plan to give up its position in those countries.

As China’s economy continues to grow, the U.S. military has started paying more attention to East Asia. Sending more military troops to the region makes it clear to China that the United States is not willing to cede power and influence. Obama and Romney have both said that they support this position and believe it is key to preventing China from spreading its influence.

Romney and Obama Have Similar Views of Iran

Romney and Obama even have similar views when it comes to Iran. Both men say that there is no proof that Iran is building nuclear weapons. They do, however, wish to topple the current regime. They primarily want to do this through economic sanctions that will cripple Iran’s economy, but neither has ruled out war. Both have hinted that, with Israel’s help, they could support a war with Iran if economic sanctions and diplomacy fail.

Undermine Leftwing Governments in Latin America

Leftwing governments in Latin America have been thorns in the U.S.’s side for decades. Concentrating on wars in the Middle East, however, has made it difficult for the United States to engage Latin American countries that have fallen under the influence of socialist regimes.

Some of the countries that Romney and Obama are worried about include Bolivia, Ecuador, and, most importantly, Venezuela. While both candidates prefer using diplomacy and sanctions to alter these regimes, military action is also a possibility.

While Mitt Romney and President Obama might seem like they have very different positions during debates and speeches, they have a fundamentally similar perspective on the military’s role in maintaining American influence and stopping regimes that threaten the country’s dominance.

Difference between Obama and Mitt are totally opposite re core foundation. One is in already deep in the process of cutting military budgets/man power and the other (Mitt) wants to increase it. All-the-while Soviets and China is progessive in building their military RIGHT NOW. Not only that, there’s more reasons why Mitt receives 60-70% of military vote and why Republican’s are now suing to ensure military members have their votes counted. Share core beliefs is a stretch for me….
