Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump found himself amidst controversy due to his treatment of veterans last weekend. He was heavily criticized by the Democrats and even his own party members.

In an interview on CNN past Sunday, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz, raised his concerns over Trump being the next commander in chief. In addition, he also criticized Trump for his comments on mocking McCain for being captured during the Vietnam War. He added, “What he said about me, that’s fine. I don’t require any repair of that. But when he said ‘I don’t like people who were captured,’ then there’s a great body of American heroes that would like to see him retract that statement.

Note that McCain’s remarks have come at a time when most high-profile party leaders are already saying that they won’t endorse Donald Trump for presidency. Air Force Reserve veteran Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, said last week that he would skip the Republican convention this summer and would never back Donald Trump.

On the other hand, Trump is in denial, refusing to accept that his comments were to mock the prisoners of war. He maintained that he has high regards of respect for veterans and for those who served in the military. However, McCain disagreed.

“I think it’s important for Donald Trump to express his appreciation for veterans, not John McCain, but veterans who were incarcerated as prisoners of war,” he added.
