The personnel that choose to serve in the United States Coast Guard in Aviation are a hardy breed. The work in the Aviation sector of the Coast Guard is highly competitive job, and it is also considered an elite job, the Coast Guard is the smallest of the Armed Services. Because the Coast Guard is the smallest of the Armed Services, the United States Coast Guard is very particular in the personnel that join their service. You have to be an excellent student and candidate, to serve as a pilot or Aviator in the Coast Guard you have to be at the best of your game.

Coast Guard Aviation is an exciting and high intensity job, and you are able to participate in every one of the missions that the Coast Guard deals with. As a pilot in the USCG Aviation specialty one can expect to spend the majority of their time supplying flying skills or actually flying. The Coast Guard because of its small size has a limited number of pilots that are available, so in the Coast Guard a pilot is often kept very busy. Both rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft are used in the Coast Guard Service, and they cover a wide spectrum of operations. Flight Training for a Coast Guard Pilot lasts from 18 to 24 months and covers basic ground school subjects, aircraft systems, and academics.

Coast Guard Pilots fly both propeller driven Fixed wing aircraft, high Speed jet aircraft, and a number of different types of helicopters. Coast Guard Missions are performed along the International Date Line in Alaska, to helicopters operating off of flight deck cutters, and to missions both in the United States, along the borders, and overseas. There are a number of fixed wing aircraft also that fly in support of the Coast Guard mission. Coast Guard pilots fly both fixed and rotary wing aircraft; most of the aircraft in the Coast Guard are in fact helicopters. Much of the training for Coast Guard Aviation is conducted at the Navy Air Command in Pensacola Florida. Coast Guard Pilots must be accomplished all weather pilots, as they will be flying in some of the most challenging weather facing aviation pilots anywhere.

Training for Coast Guard Pilots begins with flight School. The Coast Guard Pilot candidate will fly different specialized flight training aircraft including fixed wing basic aircraft.
