Believe it or not, some women think they are not cut out to join the National Guard. This is false. In all actuality, there are many positions available for women and men alike. In fact, there are more than 150 types of jobs to choose from. Women may not qualify for them all, but there are quite a few to consider.
Before we go any further, remember this: you can always call a National Guard recruiter if you are a woman interested in learning more about how you fit in. You will find out soon enough that there are many career fields and jobs to choose from. This is one of the best ways to ease your mind and help you to realize that the National Guard is a great opportunity.
The first thing that any woman must do is learn more about National Guard career fields. They include: infantry, aviation, armor and artillery, military police, medical, transportation, logistics support, mechanical, signal and military intelligence, administrative, engineering, interpreter/translator, and Special Forces.
At this point, you probably realize that joining the National Guard is a great idea. After all, you can get involved with a number of career fields.
But guess what? The career fields listed above are just the start. There are many positions within each one that you need to become familiar with. For instance, saying that you are interested in the administrative field is not good enough. You need to dig deeper and decide on the job that really matches your interests. Just a few examples of administrative jobs include: civil affairs specialist, human resources specialist, administrative specialist, and public affairs broadcast specialist.
Are there jobs in the National Guard not open to women? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is yes. The good thing is that they are few and far between. For example, as you explore infantry jobs you will realize that they are closed to women. This includes positions such as infantryman and indirect fire infantryman.
If there is a particular career path or job that you are interested in, it makes good sense to seek out additional National Guard and military information. This will give you a better idea of what you have to do to qualify, how much training is needed, and how you can get started.
Now, more so than ever before, women are getting involved with all branches of the military including the National Guard. Do not let anybody tell you that this is only a place for men – they are not right. The National Guard takes great pride in accepting both men and women. There are hundreds of jobs to choose from, one of which is going to be perfect for you.
